Role: Assistant Archivist
Salary: £ 27,007.50 per annum ( London Living Wage) 0.6 including Employer NIC and pension Contract Period: August 2025 to July 2027
Reporting to: HLF Digital Archivist / Project Manager
Responsible for: Project volunteers
We are looking for someone passionate about caring for cultural heritage (particularly that of marginalised groups and cultures) and who understands the power this has for contemporary society.
Although having some previous experience of archiving (whether this be voluntary or otherwise) may be advantageous, we are looking for a candidate who will make the most of this opportunity and align themselves with the values and practices of 198CAL. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from people who are currently underrepresented within the creative, cultural and heritage sectors. This includes people of Colour, those from the LGBTQ+ community, disabled and neurodiverse people, and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
Responsibilities
- Assist and support the Digital Archivist/Project Manager in listing, cataloguing, and conserving the 198CAL archive.
- Assist in uploading and testing the new online archive.
Recruit and manage the volunteer team. - Support volunteers in achieving accreditation through the Digital Skills Award.
- Maintain administrative systems and supervise volunteer input on Excel spreadsheets, cataloguing, and filing.
- Coordinate the digitising of archive items and objects.
- Support the planning and delivery of the HLF community engagement programme through archive material sourcing.
- Arrange site visits for volunteers to London-based archives.
- Attend staff meetings and provide updates to the project steering group.
- Support Community Engagement Project leads in using the archive.
Undertake training and staff development. - Ensuring volunteers are supported, trained, and engaged, including removing barriers to participation.
- Ensuring volunteer hours are logged and expenses are managed properly.
- Oversee the effectiveness of administrative systems and processes related to the archive project.
- Ensuring work done by volunteers is accurate and appropriately supervised.
- Ensuring compliance with training accreditation requirements by liaising with the Open College Network.
- Taking responsibility for the quality and timeliness of digitisation coordination.
- Ensuring relevant archive materials are available for the HLF engagement programme.
- Maintaining consistent communication with staff and the steering group through meetings and reports.
