198 | STEP UP JAN - APRIL 2026

Step-Up courses are back again in the beginning of next year and are a perfect opportunity for anyone looking to explore their creative side or try something new!

We're running two FREE entry-level 10-week courses, Art and Design and Advanced Film and Video, for anyone Lambeth-based, aged 19+ and unemployed or low waged, to join. To register your interest please complete this form: 198's Step Up Courses : Jan - April 2026

You will be learning new skills and refining them each week in our practical workshops, guided by our expert instructors. Our gallery offers both a welcoming and encouraging space to connect and network with like-minded people in your local community, whilst also providing learners access to industry standard equipment and software such as Adobe Creative Cloud.

Level 2: Experimental Filmmaking

27th January - 31st March

Tuesdays, 11:30am - 5pm

10 sessions over 10 weeks

Course level:

This course is designed for people who understand the basics of filming and want to develop their practice, building on some basic prior filmmaking experience. It would be preferable if you used your own equipment if you own any i.e. digital cameras, sound recording equipment etc.

Location: 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning, 198 Railton Road, Herne Hill, London, SE24 0JT (Just a 2-minute walk from Herne Hill Railway Station)

Topics covered:

Over the weeks you’ll work through short exercises in storytelling, sound recording, lighting, and editing. Sessions are practical and collaborative. By the end of the course, you will have produce a short experimental video piece.

STEP UP Photography

27th January – 3rd March

Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 10:00am - 2:40pm

12 sessions over 6 weeks

Location: Photofusion, Unit 2, 2 Beehive Place, Brixton, SW9 7QR (Just a 2-minute walk from Brixton station)

Topics covered:

This hands-on, beginner-friendly course covers the essential building blocks of photography -

DSLR camera techniques, Studio lighting setups, 35mm analogue photography including film processing and darkroom printing, Digital post-production editing workflows and smartphone photography. Throughout the course, participants will work towards a creative brief, culminating in the production of a collaborative group publication.
