Rendering the Real

When Stuart Hall spoke about Black artists in the UK diaspora as having had three distinct moments in post war history, he suggested that artists during the 90s operated in a problem space which was defined by the 80s and that the possibility of an emerging “Fourth Moment”, at the time of his writing would have been too early for discussion.

Sireita Mullings invites fellow arts practitioners to interrogate how the ‘now’ is constructed. She argues that the ‘Fourth Moment’ is largely defined by the significant work of practitioners who engage communities perceived as ‘at risk’, ‘disengaged’ ‘marginalised’ or ‘hard to reach’. She asks, “How do practitioners and their participants navigate this type casting and the lived experiences of political categorising within formal and informal arts learning spaces?”

As an extension of her photographic practice and PhD research titled ‘Postcolonial legacies of marginalisation as rendered in the visual works of young people living in Lambeth’, the exhibition and symposium invites us to identify and discuss some of the characteristics that construct and define current arts practice and assess, if any, the link between the past and present.
